My Journey Active Travel Promotion

As part of our all year round work with schools, the My Journey team runs a number of competitions aimed at promoting active and sustainable travel among the students. We like to think that we are pretty good at designing promotions, but we freely admit that when it comes to inventiveness and originality, we cannot compete with pupils. This January we thought an excellent way to start the year would be to ask them to design their own promotion.

Open to all junior school pupils, students were asked to come up with a campaign to promote active travel within their own school, making use of student travel survey information. They were given leeway to make this as creative as they wanted, anything that they thought would help persuade other students to be more sustainable in their travel plans. Running from 20th January until 5th March, we received entries from three schools, Gorse Ride Junior School, Oaklands Junior School and Evendons Primary School.

All three were invited to present these in the Council Chambers on Monday 23rd March where a winning campaign would be selected. The winning school would receive a Flow 2 air quality sensor which they could use to track the levels of air particles and pollution in and around their school.

Unfortunately this grand final had to be delayed due to COVID-19 but we are looking forward to rescheduling it again later and observing what the students have created.
