Half-Term Orienteering at Woodford Park
How confident would you be with following a map? For a lot of us, who increasingly use their phones to navigate I would be pretty confident, as long as there was a moving dot on the map showing me where I was. How easily could you read a physical 2-D map without any of these digital benefits though?
On Monday, the 17th February we put this challenge before a large group of children for our half-term Orienteering event in Woodford Park. Active travel themed cards were hidden around the playground and using the maps provided, the kids had to find these in the right order. Things got competitive fast, as different children hunted down these cards one by one. Eventually a winning group was crowned but all the groups commented on how much fun they had taking part. Some of the parents even commented that after running about so much, they wouldn't need to go to the gym!
Children’s Orienteering is one of the ways that My Journey promotes walking in the Borough, which along with cycling and public transport are an important way to be more sustainable.
Thank you to everyone who came to our half term Orienteering event in Woodford Park. All the children who took part had lots of fun finding the cards we had hidden around the play park. Some of the parents even commented that after running about so much, they wouldn't need to go to the gym!
One parent commented: 'A big thank you for a really fun half-term orienteering event run today (17th Feb) in Woodford Park. The kids really enjoyed it and it was so well organised! The small team sizes made it really fun and inclusive. Really, well done! Would love to sign up for more of these in the future'.
We have more Orienteering activities later on in the year towards the end of May. Take your kids along and try it out for yourself! Further details will be released closer to the time - look out for this which will be advertised on our website and on our Facebook page.
