Around 600 cyclists took part in the Wokingham Bikeathon, starting from Cantley Park, on a lovely sunny day last Sunday. There was a choice of 2 routes (15 miles or 35 miles) which took riders through some lovely Berkshire lanes and quiet roads.
The organisers were pleased to see such a good cross section of men, women and children of all ages taking part. Riders included family groups and Scout groups and 26 young riders from Sprockets Cycle Club also took part, accompanied by their coaches or parents. The youngest rider was a 6 year old who completed the 15 mile course in 2.5 hours; the fastest of the youngsters was an 11 year old who finished the 35 mile course in 2.5 hours.
There were 2 food and drink stops on the route, manned by the ARC Information & Counselling charity and the 1st Emmbrook Scouts.
After the ride, participants were treated to some spectacular performances by Danny Butler’s Extreme Mountain Bike Show at Cantley Park.
The My Journey team were also there, with information about local cycling events, cycle training and sustainable travel. Lots of riders made themselves smoothies on our pedal-powered smoothie bike and some younger children tried out the balance bikes.
The Bikeathon is organised by volunteers and every year it makes thousands of pounds which are donated to local charities.
