Bikeability Balance

Children in Reception and Year 1 at Emmbrook Infant and South Lake Primary Schools have been enjoying a Bikeability Balance course this month.  Cycle Experience instructors delivered the course over 4 x 45 minute sessions (once a week for 4 weeks) and provided the balance bikes to ride.

On the course, the children learned to ride a balance bike (a bike with no pedals) by propelling the bike with their feet. They also learned to stop and start the bike, steer around objects and “glide” with their feet off the floor. This is great preparation for learning to ride a pedal bike and it eliminates the need for stabilisers, as the children have already mastered the skill of balancing on a bike.

Pictures show some of the Year 1 children at Emmbrook Infant School enjoying the course.

There is a cost involved in having a Bikeability Balance course at a school, although many schools can pay for this from their school sports premium grants.

The My Journey team also offer FREE balance bike training for pre-school children at our Balance Bike Club on Thursdays at the FBC centre. Full details can be found here.
